Real estate group spotlights veteran ABQ broker with unique honor

John Henderson III has spent four decades in commercial real estate and is known among Albuquerque brokers as someone who is quick-witted, a leader and most of all, a mentor.

Todd Clarke of NM Apartment Advisors described Henderson as one of a handful of individuals who molded Albuquerque's real estate community into one that is friendly, cooperative and willing to share deals with each other.

"[They] decided we were all better off creating a bigger pie than we were making our individual slices larger," Clarke said. "More than any person in our community, he has modeled what it means to be a mentor."

Recognizing Henderson's leadership in the community, the New Mexico chapter of the national real estate organization CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) created an endowed scholarship in Henderson's name.

The John M. Henderson III Endowed Scholarship was revealed during the chapter's annual Deal of the Year event last week. It will be awarded to a broker working to receive his or her CCIM designation for years to come.

Henderson has a long list of achievements in real estate. He entered the real estate industry right out of college and received his CCIM designation in 1980.

He was past president of the Albuquerque Board of Realtors and past president of CCIM New Mexico. He co-founded the local commercial association of Realtors called CARNM, and he founded the Leasing Information Network, a networking forum for those involved with leasing commercial real estate.

He spent 18 years at Grubb & Ellis New Mexico and most recently worked as a director at NAI Maestas & Ward, where he focused on the investment and leasing of office and industrial properties. He retired from the industry last year.

Scooter Haynes, president of CCIM New Mexico, said the organization's board of directors chose Henderson and kept it a secret until the night of the event.
