Melrose Fashions Opens Its First Albuquerque Store

ALBUQUERQUE — Taking advantage of Albuquerque’s favorable economic climate and its large and vibrant Hispanic population, San Antonio, Texas-based discount fashion retailer Melrose has opened its 87 th store at Pro’s Ranch Atrisco Plaza, located at the intersection of Central Avenue and Atrisco Drive N.W.

The 8,000-square-foot Melrose store features a wide array of affordable, trendy, non-branded fashion clothing and accessories. The retailer’s core customers are young adult Hispanic women, juniors and teens.

“Hispanic teens and young women are very much our target demographic,” said Koyt Everhart, director of real estate for Melrose, which opened its first store in McAllen, Texas in 1976 and now has nearly 100 stores in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. “We are thrilled to be in Pro’s Ranch Atrisco Plaza and the primary Hispanic trade area in Albuquerque’s southwest quadrant.”

One of the reasons for Melrose’s immediate success at this location is its proximity to the center’s anchor store and namesake, Pro’s Ranch Grocery, a California-based grocery store and hot foods service that caters to the Hispanic community. The 80,000-square-foot market, which opened last fall, has exceeded sales projections and has been the catalyst for reinvigorating the West Central Avenue trade area.

“As the natural demographics continue to grow in Hispanic and Mexican retail markets, merchants are repositioning to take advantage of that growth. In other Southwest cities with large Hispanic and Mexican populations, like El Paso, Texas, these two retailers co-locate in a shopping mall and perform very well,” said Steve Maestas of NAI Maestas & Ward Commercial Real Estate, who handled the Albuquerque store transaction for Melrose. “Having Pro’s Ranch and Melrose in this location is the first step toward meaningful change and revitalization in this neighborhood.

“And the young miss Latina market is exploding in Albuquerque,” Maestas added. “ Melrose will do very well here.”
