Local coffee company opens first drive-thru location to compete against Starbucks

You now have a new stop on your way to work to get your morning caffeine.

New Mexico Piñon Coffee Co. opened its first drive-thru location at 5222 4th St. NW. It's the locally-based coffee producer's second store in Albuquerque.

The new shop will serve New Mexico Piñon Coffee's house-made coffee, such as its dark piñon roast and its popular Biscochito latte. The shop will also serve teas, smoothies, baked goods and more. Rather than install a speaker for drive-thru orders, an attendant will help customers order and offer suggestions and answer questions.

The company's president, Allen Bassett, told Business First he specifically wanted a drive-thru location to better compete with Starbucks. Bassett worked with Todd Strickland of NAI Maestas and Ward to find the new 2,300-square-foot location, a former Arby's restaurant. The landlord was represented by Alfredo Barrenechea of Absolute Investment Realty.

A grand opening will take place Oct. 28 for the public starting at 9 a.m. The grand opening will help raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of New Mexico.

Coffee is the No. 2 specialty item in the U.S., following cheese, according to the Specialty Food Association. In 2014, coffee accounted for $3.4 billion in U.S. sales.

This will be the coffee company's second retail store. It opened its first storefront on Alameda Boulevard in February 2015.
